Kawasaki’s Adventurous Entry into India’s Off-Road Market

kawasakis adventurous entry into indias off road market

Kawasaki has officially introduced its side-by-side vehicle lineup to the Indian market, catering to a variety of applications. From utilitarian models designed for tasks like agriculture and passenger transport to machines built purely for adventure, the range is diverse. The offerings include the Teryx 4 H2, Teryx KRX 1000, Teryx KRX4 1000, Ridge Crew, and Mule Pro-FXT 1000 LE.

A Closer Look at the Teryx KRX4 1000

The Teryx KRX4 1000 stands out as a performance-focused off-road buggy designed to handle the toughest terrains. With its 999cc parallel-twin engine delivering 110hp at 8,300rpm and 102Nm at 7,000rpm, it’s built for serious exploration. The vehicle is equipped with 15-inch wheels wrapped in Maxxis Carnivore tyres, long-travel Showa suspension with adjustable damping, Electric Power Steering (EPS), and selectable two- and four-wheel drive options. Its CVT transmission simplifies control, making it well-suited for off-road adventures.

During a brief test drive at Pro Dirt Adventure, the vehicle’s capabilities became apparent. Despite being left-hand-drive and not street legal, it excelled on dirt trails. The CVT transmission allows for easy gear selection and driving, while the 4WD mode proved invaluable on the challenging course. The KRX4’s engine comes alive in the mid-range, offering robust acceleration.

Performance and Handling

What truly sets the KRX4 apart is its suspension system. It absorbs impacts that would challenge even a dedicated SUV, effortlessly navigating over mounds and rough terrain. As a passenger during a rocky section, I witnessed the vehicle conquer obstacles that seemed insurmountable from the outside. The Maxxis Carnivore tyres enhance its performance by providing reliable traction on loose surfaces.

The open cabin design means occupants will encounter mud and debris, adding an element of excitement to the experience. On a course section featuring a small jump, the KRX4 demonstrated its stability, launching smoothly and landing with composure.

Challenges and Ownership Considerations

Despite its impressive features, the KRX4’s size posed challenges on the motorcycle-oriented track, particularly in navigating tight hairpin corners. With practice, drivers can learn to handle these turns more effectively, but it requires experience to avoid tipping over.

In India, ownership of these side-by-side vehicles presents unique challenges. They aren’t road legal and are best suited for private properties or dedicated off-road parks. Additionally, they require specific petrol, not E20-compatible, which may necessitate planning in remote areas. Kawasaki offers maintenance support, yet potential owners must consider logistical aspects.

The price range, starting at Rs 38 lakh and reaching up to Rs 78.90 lakh, places these machines in a niche market. The Teryx KRX4 1000 itself costs Rs 52.9 lakh, appealing to those seeking unique adventure experiences rather than practicality.
