Starting my drive with the Mercedes-Benz E 220d has become a ritual. I fire up the engine, roll down the windows, and crank the fan to maximum. This method quickly cools the cabin, especially in the sweltering heat. However, the E-Class presents a unique challenge. Adjusting the fan speed to its highest setting requires navigating the touchscreen, which is not ideal when reversing, as the camera feed occupies the screen. Fortunately, voice commands simplify this process. By saying, “Hey Mercedes, take fan speed to maximum,” the system adjusts the blower speed, allowing me to focus on maneuvering out of tight spots. The voice assistant, ‘Helga,’ has proven to be quite capable, responding to various commands, including opening windows.
Driving the E-Class has revealed the harmonious blend of contemporary features and classic Mercedes-Benz qualities. Despite some questionable elements like the gear selector’s build or the occasional creaky plastic, the car exudes a sense of durability and solidity. The E-Class handles the rough, pothole-ridden roads with grace, thanks to its supple suspension that maintains stability even on uneven surfaces. The coil springs, in particular, stand out for their superior performance over sharp bumps, providing a smoother ride compared to air springs. The sedan’s design, coupled with its long wheelbase, ensures a more comfortable ride than any SUV can offer.
Impressive Insulation and Engine Performance
Inside the E-Class, the cabin is a sanctuary from the chaotic noise of Indian traffic. While loud noises occasionally penetrate, the general din is effectively muted, allowing for a serene driving experience. This tranquility is especially noticeable when passing through bustling junctions like the one in Byculla, Mumbai.
The 220 diesel engine stands out for its refinement. From a passenger’s perspective, it’s challenging to differentiate it from a petrol engine, particularly at low and medium speeds once warmed up. The absence of typical diesel rattles and clatter contributes to this illusion. Only at higher revs does a faint diesel drone become apparent. However, the engine’s relaxed demeanor at standstill can be disconcerting. It feels sluggish when accelerating gently, requiring a more assertive push on the throttle, especially at traffic lights. This issue is not present in Sport mode, where the hybrid system’s 27hp e-boost integrates seamlessly, enhancing the driving experience.
Addressing Some Shortcomings
Throughout the time with the E-Class, a few minor issues emerged. The dashboard’s ‘glass’ surface is prone to fingerprints, which are challenging to clean. Additionally, the car’s design does not comfortably accommodate five passengers due to the narrow center seat, which is only suitable for short trips. The long wheelbase necessitates careful navigation over large speed breakers, particularly when the car is fully loaded.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the E-Class remains endearing. Its steering responsiveness and the ability to feel compact during spirited drives enhance the driving pleasure. The rear seat experience is akin to first-class travel, with unmatched comfort, refinement, and build quality. Furthermore, the diesel engine’s efficiency is commendable, offering impressive fuel economy, especially in urban settings. It’s no surprise that the E-Class continues to lead its class, even with its premium pricing.
